Fluxgrip FG401MA Fault Issue

Dear Zubax Team,

I have purchased a FG401MA with analog interface capabilities and have been testing out with it. However, when testing, we found out that providing 20V to the magnets, even though rated up to 30V for the power supply, causes it to go into fault state. Whereas the same set up with 5V power supply works well. The reason we want to use 20V is to activate the magnets with a shorter delay after the signal is sent.

After going into fault state, the magnets no longer responds to analog signals so I tried to clear the fault state with the CAN interface and activate it via CAN instead.

In using the CAN interface. Firstly, when using the yakut monitor, initially, it shows the states properly, but soon only output a table of 2 rows. Next, publishing the command to turn it on does not cause the magnet to turn on. The subscriber receives the magnetization command briefly and went back to false state, afterwards, the magnets go back into fault state, showing a VSSC of 5.

I would greatly appreciate your assistance in fixing the fault state and getting the magnet to work with 20V. Thanks!

Hi,

Thanks for the extensive write-up.

The reason we want to use 20V is to activate the magnets with a shorter delay after the signal is sent.

I’d like to note here that (currently) this is not a strictly linear relationship, as the bus voltage increases the charger is currently using a shorter and shorter pulses to charge the capacitor (which in turn magnetizes the magnet). (There is probably a slight difference between 5V and 20V in terms of magnetization speed.)

After going into fault state, the magnets no longer responds to analog signals

This is the expected behaviour, you will see one of the LEDs blinking rapidly, indicating the Fault state of the magnet. (See the Quickstart Guide for videos of the LED patterns).

initially, it shows the states properly, but soon only output a table of 2 rows

2 rows is what you would expect (briefly a third row appears when issueing the command)

Copying from the (outdated) Quickstart Guide:

The subscriber receives the magnetization command briefly and went back to false state, afterwards, the magnets go back into fault state, showing a VSSC of 5.

This error code means that the controller circuit wasn’t able to charge the capacitor to the required voltage (it times out after a certain duration). This indicates either insufficient power being available, however in your case it sounds like the controller has simply failed.

  • If your magnet is still working at 5V I would try updating the firmware to the latest version (see instructions here) and try again at 20V, I’ve slightly tuned the charging pattern in the latest version, so it could potentially resolve the issue.
  • If the magnet has completely stopped working (at any voltage), please send an email to support@zubax.com with your order number and address you’d like to receive the replacement unit.

PS: This is a known issue affecting a small percentage of the produced magnets (failing at higher voltages). The latest firmware update is a small step towards solving the issue (the failure rate should be less) and we’re currently working on a Final Solution© which should put this problem to rest completely.
